UGANDA MOUNTAIN GORILLA SAFARI /GORILLA TOURS

The minimum age for a gorilla tour is 15 years. Any one with sings of communicable disease is not allowed to trek. Please not that it I s a strenuous activity and one should be physically fit to undertake it. While possession of gorilla tracking permit cannot be guaranteed, maximum time allowed with the gorillas will not exceed an hour.
Mgahinga National Park is located in the south western part of Uganda
and covers 38sq Kms. It covers the Northern slopes of the three northern most Virunga volcanoes, Mount Muhavura (4,127m), Mount Mgahinga (3,474m) and Mount Sabinyo (3,645m). The park is bordered to the South by the republic of Rwanda and to the West by the Democratic republic of Congo.

The park varies in altitude from 2227-4127m or 7304-13536ft.The area ranges from the lower gentle slopes to rugged slopes as steep as 60 degrees at high altitudes often with vehicle cliffs and rock exposures. Mount Sabinyo is deeply eroded, with jagged crown and deep gorges and ravines. Mount Mgahinga has a swamp-filled crater lake about 36m wide at its summit. On some of the steep slopes there are caves formed by lava tubes. The park experiences two dry seasons from January –February and May-August. The wetter months are March-April and September-November. June and July are the driest months. During rains the park is often covered in mist and the air is always damp. Temperatures can reach freezing point at altitudes above 3000m and hailstorms are common.

The vegetation of Mgahinga is typically afromontane, with a forest belt, a bamboo zone, an evicious belt and an alpine zone. The park supports a variety of animal species including gorilla, rare golden monkey, buffalo, elephant, leopard and serval cat. There are  over 79 bird species, which include several species endemic to the East Congo Montane region. Among them is the Vulnerable Grauer’s Swamp Warbler that lives only in the swamp saddle between Gahinga and Sabinyo. Activities here include golden monkey tracking, gorilla tracking (April, May, June, October, November, December), Bird watching as well as half day hikes and full day climb to the summit of Mt.Muhavura or Mt.Mgahinga, or the breathtaking Satiny gorge.
